Joon-Ho Shim

The promising young cellist Joon-Ho Shim won the 40th International Jeunesses Musicales Competition in 2010. The panel of judges unanimously chose him to be the first Korean winner with chairman Ms.Natalia Gutman's saying,"He is a real musician who performs with both intellect and great passion in his heart."  Joon-ho began studying the cello at the age of ten. As a teenager, he entered the most prominent art education institutes in Korea, Yewon Arts Middle School in 2000 and Seoul Arts High School in 2003 both as a distinguished student.  

Joon-ho is currently studying with Professor Truls Mørk at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Previously, he studied with Professor Cho Young Chang at Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany. Joon-ho made his professional debut at the Kumho Young Artist Concert in 2000. This performance was met with critical acclaim and resulted in the 1st prize at 32nd Jung-Ang Competition and the second prize in 5th Antonio Janigro Competition. 

Joon-ho has performed with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Seong-nam Philharmonic Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, German Junge Sinfonie Berlin, Belgrade RTS Orchestra, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, and was invited to the St.Gellert festival in Szeged, Hungary, the Kammermuziekdagen in Oudewater, Netherlands, and the Seoul Spring Festival in Korea, among others. 
An active chamber musician, Joon-ho is currently performing as a member of the Kallaci String Quartet and Ensemble Alba, a clarinet trio that is a member of the European Chamber Music Academy.
