Violinist Sungmin Yoo, native of Korea, has won numerous competitions in the US. She has won second prize and the Best Bach Award in the Kingsville Young Artist International Competition, first prize in the Tuesday Musical Scholarship Competition, and winner of Oberlin Conservatory Concerto Competition. Ms. Yoo also won the Best Bach Award at the Corpus Christi International Competition. Earlier, Sungmin Yoo won top prizes in several major competitions in Korea, including Ihwa –Kyunghyang Competition and Korea Times Competition in Seoul, Korea.
As a soloist, Ms.Yoo began to win the national recognition at the early age. She made her concerto debut with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 11. Three years later she made her debut with Korea’s leading orchestras such as the Korean Symphony Orchestra and Seoul Symphony Orchestra. In 1994, she came to the U.S to study with Rafael Druian at Curtis Institute of Music. In 2001, Ms.Yoo performed Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Oberlin Orchestra under Paul Polivnick after winning the concerto competition. Most recently, she has appeared as a soloist with the NEC Bach Ensemble at the Jordan Hall performing Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
An avid chamber musician, she has participated in the Aspen, Banff, Kneisel Hall, Norfolk, Taos, and Sarasota music festivals; the Verbier Academy, Juilliard Quartet Seminar, and Jaime Laredo's New York String Orchestra Seminar. She has collaborated with world renowned artist such as the members of Cleveland Quartet, and Juilliard Quartet, among others. Her recent collaborations include chamber music performances at 2009 Banff Music Festival with Andres Diaz, Chen Halevi, Soovin Kim and Berry Shiffman and chamber music performances at 2010 Norfolk Chamber Music Festival with members of Tokyo String Quartet.
She is also an active orchestral player as well. She served as concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra and NEC Chamber Orchestra. She served as a substitute member for Boston Symphony Orchestra and she was appointed as the assistant concertmaster of Cape Cod symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2014. She also has served as a member of Canton and Akron Symphony Orchestra. Her orchestra gigs include Riverside Philharmonic Orchestra, Dicapo Opera Theater, Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra Cosmopolitan Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gardner Museum Chamber Orchestra and Simon Sinfonietta.
Sungmin Yoo holds a Doctoral’s degree and Graduate Diploma from New England Conservatory of music where she also served as an assistant to Donald Weilerstetin and Master’s degree from the Juilliard School. For her undergraduate studies, Ms. Yoo attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she studied with Almita and Roland Vamos as a full scholarship student. Ms.Yoo is currently teaching at Seoul National University of Arts and serving as a member for Erato Ensemble, Hwaeum Chamber Orchestra and Archi Chamber Music Society.
